Short Run Calenders

There are basically three different types of calendars: The flip chart type, the single sheet type and the tear off type.Flip chart calendars are usually printed as 11?¬¢‚Äö?ᬮ¬¨?? x 17 or 12?¬¢‚Äö?ᬮ¬¨?? x 18?¬¢‚Äö?ᬮ¬¨?? sheets and are folded and saddle stitched to make a booklet. Seven four-page signatures are the most common giving you the 12 months plus a front and back cover. Sometimes a thumbnail of each month is printed on the back cover giving a preview of the illustration for each month. A hole is drilled on the center of the top edge to facilitate hanging them on the wall. As each month passes another page is turned revealing a new month and a pretty picture. The picture changes each month so the topic can change also with the seasons, with a religious calendar or with the school year. This type of calendar is used frequently by fund raising organizations like elementary schools where the students illustrate the pictures, sometimes using crayons or watercolor. The production of this type of calendar is efficient because it uses the same equipment to make saddle stitched booklets and newsletters.

Single sheet calendars are usually larger, common sizes are 17?¬¢‚Äö?ᬮ¬¨?? x 22 or 18?¬¢‚Äö?ᬮ¬¨?? x 24?¬¢‚Äö?ᬮ¬¨?? and consist of just a single sheet printed on a heavy cover stock. They can lay flat or be hung on the wall. Normally it will have a picture in the center and the months of the year surrounding the picture. Advertising on the perimeter of the sheet is sometimes used to raise funds to finance the printing costs. Lots of high school football teams, cheerleading squads, dance schools and fire departments use these as a way to raise funds. These single sheets are the least expensive way to produce a calendar and the Xeikon 5000 Digital Web press is very efficient at producing spectacular color for short runs. As a fundraiser, batches of 50 or 100 calendars of this type can generate a significant revenue.

Tear off calendars are a third way to produce calendars and are sort of a blend between the flip chart type and the single sheet type. To produce a tear off calendar the picture or illustration is printed on a relatively heavy cover stock and covers just the top half of the sheet. The months of the year are printed on lighter weight paper and padded in sets of twelve; one for each month of the year. The padded sets are usually half the size of the large sheet and are either stapled or glued to the lower half of the sheet. As the months pass the old one it removed revealing the current month. Tear off calendars are normally the size closed to that of the flip chart calendars, 11?¬¢‚Äö?ᬮ¬¨?? x 17?¬¢‚Äö?ᬮ¬¨?? or 12?¬¢‚Äö?ᬮ¬¨?? x 18?¬¢‚Äö?ᬮ¬¨?? although they can be made larger. Even larger tear off calendars are called desk pads where a large sheet is printed with an open grid for the days of the week. Sets of twelve months are padded with a heavier cardboard backing. The open grid provides space for making notes, setting appointments or just doodling. Every month a sheet is removed revealing the new month and a fresh calendar for making notes. These sets can be sized to fit into desk pad holders which are available at any large office supply outlet. Standard sizes are 17?¬¢‚Äö?ᬮ¬¨?? x 22?¬¢‚Äö?ᬮ¬¨?? or 18?¬¢‚Äö?ᬮ¬¨?? x 24?¬¢‚Äö?ᬮ¬¨??; ideal sizes for production of the Xeikon 5000 digital web press.
